03 May My 6-Week Travel In India: My Adventure With Chai And Naan
In 2007, just before starting my Master’s degree, I made one of the best decisions of my life: I quit my job early and booked a six-week trip to India from the UK.
What followed was a once-in-a-lifetime backpacking adventure through India—a journey packed with colour, chaos, culture, and unforgettable memories.
Planning a budget trip to India
My boyfriend and I were determined to see as much of India as possible. Given the size of the country, that meant a lot of travelling. Thankfully, travelling in India is relatively easy—especially if you plan ahead.
Our best travel hack? We booked most of our journeys on overnight sleeper trains. Not only were they budget-friendly, but they also saved us money on accommodation and helped us cover large distances efficiently. Honestly, if you're planning a trip to India, take the train. It's part of the experience and definitely one of the highlights of our trip.
Cities and regions we visited in India
Over six incredible weeks, we explored:
- Delhi
- Agra
- Varanasi
- Jaipur
- Rajasthan
- Kolkata (then Calcutta)
- Kochi
- Chennai
- Mamallapuram
- Goa
- Mumbai
From the majestic Taj Mahal in Agra to the spiritual ghats of Varanasi, every stop was unique. We experienced vibrant markets, serene temples, chaotic traffic, mouth-watering street food, and some of the most welcoming people I’ve ever met.
A trip etched in memory
The colours, smells, and energy of India have stayed with me ever since. It was one of the wildest, most eye-opening trips I've ever taken—and it remains a highlight of my travelling life.
If you’re thinking of backpacking through India, do it. Travel smart, embrace the unexpected, and let the journey change you.
