The TEFL Academy

The TEFL Academy is highly regarded for its accreditation, comprehensive curriculum, and student support. It's a globally recognized certification. The TEFL Academy aims to give students all the tools they need to succeed in a classroom, whether they’re teaching online or abroad.

Pros of The TEFL Academy:

  1. Comprehensive course content: The TEFL Academy offers Level 5 TEFL certification, equivalent to the same standard as a CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). The Level 5 course is robust, covering practical teaching methods, grammar, classroom management, and lesson planning.
  2. Accredited and recognised: Their Level 5 courses are internationally recognized and accredited by the Open and Distance Learning Quality Council (ODLQC) and DEAC (Distance Education Accrediting Commission). This ensures that graduates can apply for TEFL jobs worldwide, and employers recognize the value of this certification.
  3. Flexible learning options: The TEFL Academy offers both online and combined (online + classroom) courses. This is ideal for students who want flexibility in their learning approach while also experiencing in-person practice.
  4. Job placement assistance: Graduates benefit from job placement services and partnerships with reputable teaching organizations and schools worldwide. The TEFL Academy offers valuable resources, including a jobs board, CV assistance, and interview tips. The TEFL Academy cannot guarantee you a job and they can't apply for you, but they advertise loads of jobs from their trusted partners ie employers you can trust. And they'll do anything they can to help you put your best application forward.
  5. Affordable pricing: Their courses are competitively priced and frequently discounted, making it an accessible choice without sacrificing quality.

Cons of The TEFL Academy:

  1. Limited timeframe: The Level 5 course must be completed within 6 months, which may be challenging for some students with busy schedules. But considering the length of the course and he flexibility, 6 months is more than enough time to complete the course. If necessary, you can pay for an extension to your course.
  2. Less in-person training: The combined course only offers a short in-person component, which may not be sufficient for those looking for extensive classroom experience. Having said that, these days an online TEFL course is just as acceptable as a face-to-face course.

i-to-i TEFL

i-to-i TEFL is one of the longest-running TEFL course providers, known for its flexibility and accessibility. They offer a wide range of courses catering to different experience levels and learning preferences.

Pros of i-to-i TEFL:

  1. Range of courses: i-to-i TEFL offers a variety of courses, from short beginner-level courses to more in-depth Level 5 certifications. They also have specialisations like teaching online, Business English, and teaching Young Learners. (But so does The TEFL Academy. They're called Top-Up Courses and you get all three for free when you sign up for a Level 5 course).
  2. Budget-friendly: They have affordable introductory courses, making it accessible for those unsure about committing to a full TEFL program. Their frequent promotions allow students to save on courses.
  3. User-friendly platform: i-to-i’s course platform is well-organized and easy to navigate, making online learning simple and efficient.
  4. Teaching practicum options: Some i-to-i courses offer teaching practicums abroad, which can be beneficial for hands-on experience.
    • Lifetime job support: i-to-i provides lifetime access to job boards and resources, which is advantageous for long-term support.

Cons of i-to-i TEFL:

  1. Not all courses are Level 5: While they offer Level 5 certifications, not all courses meet this standard. This can be confusing for students, as employers tend to prefer a Level 5 qualification. (This is the same with The TEFL Academy, who offer a Level 3 and a Level 5. A Level 5 is more well-recognised but a Level 3 is find for online work, volunteer work and internships.
  2. Less emphasis on classroom skills: i-to-i courses focus heavily on theory rather than classroom skills, which may not fully prepare some students for practical teaching.
  3. Limited accreditation: While i-to-i is accredited by Ofqual for its Level 5 course, it lacks the extensive accreditation partnerships that The TEFL Academy offers, limiting its global recognition slightly.

TEFL.org

TEFL.org is another reputable provider, known for its thorough approach to TEFL training and long-standing experience in the industry. Their courses offer a balance of theory and practice.

Pros of TEFL.org:

  1. High-quality instruction: TEFL.org’s courses are developed by experienced TEFL educators. (as is The TEFL Academy's). Their curriculum is rigorous and covers key aspects like classroom management, teaching methods, and cultural awareness.
  2. Wide range of courses: They offer everything from basic 20-hour courses to advanced 198-hour programs, catering to different budgets and goals. But I wouldn't recommend anything less than a 120-hour course.
  3. In-person course options: TEFL.org provides practical, in-person workshops in addition to online learning, making it appealing to students who want hands-on experience.
  4. Accredited and recognised: TEFL.org is accredited by several educational bodies, such as DEAC and ODLQC, which makes it a trustworthy choice with worldwide recognition.
  5. Jobs board access: TEFL.org offers graduates access to a jobs board with global teaching opportunities.

Cons of TEFL.org:

  1. Higher cost: TEFL.org courses are generally more expensive than The TEFL Academy’s, which may not be ideal for budget-conscious students.
  2. Strict deadlines: Some courses have strict deadlines for completion, which can be challenging for students who need a more flexible schedule.
  3. Limited additional support: While they offer jobs board access, TEFL.org doesn’t provide as extensive post-graduation support as The TEFL Academy.

Why The TEFL Academy is the best choice

When comparing these three providers, The TEFL Academy stands out as the top choice. Here’s why:

  1. Value for money: The TEFL Academy offers a comprehensive Level 5 course at an affordable price, making it the best option for those looking for quality education without a hefty price tag. They regularly run specials so you can keep an eye on their socials for the latest deals.
  2. Global recognition: With accreditation from respected institutions like DEAC and ODLQC, The TEFL Academy’s certification is highly respected globally, giving graduates a competitive advantage when job hunting.
  3. Comprehensive support: Unlike many providers, The TEFL Academy goes the extra mile by offering job placement assistance, access to exclusive job boards, and valuable resources that help graduates feel prepared and confident.
  4. Flexible and practical: With both online and combined courses, The TEFL Academy’s offerings cater to different learning styles. The online modules are detailed, while the in-person component provides valuable real-life teaching insights.
  5. Excellent student reviews: The TEFL Academy consistently receives high ratings from students, which speaks volumes about the quality of its courses, customer service, and post-graduation support.

Overall, The TEFL Academy offers an ideal blend of affordability, flexibility, and comprehensive support that makes it the best choice for aspiring TEFL teachers.

Remember, when it comes to a teaching qualification like a TEFL qualification, you don't want to go for cheap-and-cheerful. This is an intensive teacher training course. If can buy it from Group for R20 (or even worse if it's free) or if it can be done in a weekend, it's probably not worth it.

Why waste your time and money on a piece of paper that won't help you get a job, and it won't help you be a TEFL teacher?
